ORIGIN & HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE

The historical Vettath Kaavu temple is situated about 12 kilometers from Tirur town of Malappuram district at the bank of Tirur - Ponnani river in the village of Vettom. Even though, authentic details concerning the age of the present temple, is not available, it is considered to be very ancient. It is believed that the deity is the family deity of Vettom dynasty. History observes, the last king of the dynasty to have reigned during the later part of 18th century.

The legend has it that the then king - a devotee of goddess Mookambika pleaded when she appeared before him, to come to his land - Vettom. Devi consented and it is believed that she resides in the palace. From then the King offered ablutions and was worshiping Devi regularly. The palace ground where the offerings were made to the Devi was considered to be the original sanctum - 'Sreemoolasthanam' - of the temple complex.

The present temple was built later, a few feet away from the 'Sreemoolasthanam'. The presiding deity in the sanctum sanctorum is Goddess Mookambika. The sub shrines are Shiva- Parvathi, Ganapathi, Ayappa inside the temple complex and Brahmarakshas and Nagapradishta outside. Towards the south-west of the temple, lies the huge tank called the "valiya chira" which was used by the royal family. On the north - west, an octa-angled tank, "Elanthikulam" is situated.
